Swimming for Disabled People

Braywick Leisure Center runs swimming sessions to support physically disabled swimmers on Saturday afternoons using a team of volunteers to help swimmers around poolside and in the water if required. Sharon and Chris who head up the team have several years of experience working with disabled swimmers of all ages and disabilities. We welcome anyone from people who need help in the water to stay afloat up to confident swimmers who just need some help on poolside.

The Braywick Leisure Centre swimming pool is a new (2021) 10 lane, 25 metre pool. It features gently sloping steps and supportive handrails as well as a pool lift to gently lower swimmers into the water seated in an aqua wheelchair. It has a specialised changing places changing room with hoist, shower and toilet. There are also a range of other changing rooms with extra wide benches which can accommodate wheelchairs and helpers. Note our volunteers cannot help in the changing rooms but will assist you to and from them.

Payments for the sessions are made at the desk and are £2.65 per session (45 mins).

Braywick also has a shallow pool which is ideal for younger swimmers, the fountains are turned off to give a quiet environment for more sensitive swimmers.
